After a boat capsized in Lake St. Clair last Saturday, one passenger lost his life while others were rescued shortly after.
Preliminary autopsy reports show that Hassen Randel died of drowning, according to the Macomb County Medical Examiner's Office. The man operating the boat was rescued, partly due to the fact that he had been wearing a life vest. He was quickly transported to a local hospital where he was treated for hypothermia. Although police are not releasing any more information about the boat operator, they have said that his injuries are non-life-threatening.
Both men were in the water for at least half an hour before the U.S. Coast Guard arrived. The station, located twenty minutes away from the site of the sinking, received a 911 call from one of the boaters asking for assistance. The boat, they said, was taking on water and sinking.
