Child Injuries Increasing According to Report

One researcher has reported that the number of children under the age of 19 being sent to the emergency room with concussions and other traumatic brain injuries has increased by 62% over the last 10 years. Experts believe that the number of brain related child injuries has gone up both because more children are playing sports and because adults are taking head injuries more seriously.

In seven out of ten cases, the child sent to an emergency room with a traumatic brain injury was male. Football injuries made up a full one fifth of all brain injuries incurred by boys under the age of 19. Among boys aged between 15 years old and 19 years old, the number of football related head injuries rises to half of all brain injuries. The number of brain injuries related to football is more than the number of head injuries from bicycling, basketball, and soccer combined.

According to the report boys are three times more likely than girls to suffer a brain injury while playing any sport. This is largely due to the fact that girls are less likely to play full contact sports, especially football.
