Family Sues Boy Scouts for Wrongful Death

News sources report that the Boy Scouts of America are being sued by a couple that lost their son while he was hiking in the Everglades.  Reports indicate that 17 year old Michael Sclawy-Adelman died last year of heat stroke while on a 20 mile hike in the Big Cypress Nature Preserve.  He was trying to earn his Eagle Scout merit badge at the time of his death.

In their lawsuit, Sclawy-Adelman's parents claim that the Boy Scouts were negligent while handling the incident.  They say that the organization approved of the hike even though temperatures had reached 100 degrees.  They also say that their son displayed signs of heat exhaustion, which were ignored.

Their wrongful death claim has been filed against the national, regional and local Boy Scouts, as well as the two Scout leaders who organized the May 2009 hike.  The parents also want the organization to make changes that could have saved their son's life.

At this time, representatives of the Boy Scouts of America and the South Florida Council have refused to comment on the litigation.
